this thread is great. When I get back to Thailand I am taking an enduro course and picking up whatever kind of road/trail bike I can find over there.

yeah, very little time in the saddle. i am still walking funny :p

are you thinking of getting one woodsy?

Nope. The bike I want isn't made yet, but I suspect it will be made in the future.

It is a 250cc sized dual sport at less than 300# dry and around 60 hp and truly dual sport tires (good on/off road in all conditions - NOT tourance and NOT DOT knobs - but right in the middle of those two), 2 up all day touring ergos + ute rack that will actually handle some weight. If it can't do 0-60 in 4 seconds and top out at ~130 mph, I won't want it.

Refined 2-cycle low emission engines will make that possible - and soon!

I cannot justify replacing the 'strom with anything else until it passes the 100k mile mark. Right now it's about 1/3 the way there...just barely broken in, and though it's super porky, a little slow, has a high c.o.g., and limited ground clearance, it's still one of the very finest available for getting from here to there whatever the ground might be like in between.

I'm still waiting for pics from you or livelife when you guys rented those bikes. Did I miss them? I know one of you guys took some pics of that.

mkay, i am just that close to going down and buying an ('88 or '89) r100gs with ALL the bells and whistles (shocks, souped up alternater, 12 gal tank) all that at a really good price.

maybe i can get a trailer for it and just get a small dirt only bike and tow it to the dirt :p

not the bike, but just to give you an idea:

That the 100 is a huge pig (WAY too heavy to be practical off-road).

Rule of thumb for off-road is less=more.

I'm quite taken with this little bike as a runabout.... part of why I like it is the seat height is 31 - so I can flat foot it.... wouldn't want to ride it long distances on highways but looks fun for fire roads, beach etc

Yamaha TW200 dual sport

I do like those, but the extra fat tires are weird. We had one of those + a 350 Honda dual sport when I worked for MDNR. I never did take the tw out - not even for a short ride, but we did have the other bike out doing wheelies with it one day in the field office yard + I took it out to cruise timber with once. I liked it, 'cept the wimpy gas tank it had in it.

Look what followed me home today!!! '09 Yamaha TW200

Called one of the local dealers to see if he had any in stock I could look at. About two months ago a guy bought two of them - one for himself and the other for his wife. Turns out the wife didn't take to riding so he brought them back a couple of weeks ago, trading them in on a quad. So, I got a great deal on a very gently used '09 with 79 miles on it!!!! Already took it on a pizza run and its darn fun. Mr. U. Swain - would be a great sort of bike for what you are doing in SEA.

Maddy has to check out why I rearranged the two wheeled denizens of the garage. Yep, all the seats of my bikes have cat tracks all over them....
