GPS navigation

Postby Firemutt54 » Thu Nov 26, 2009 3:16 pm

In the past I never used a GPS to go hiking but, am now interested in getting one. What has anybody used and would recommend for other people to use as a good hiking/ geocatching GPS ? Mind you I’m not rich. I have looked all over online for one and read reviews from people. But it always seems like it’s not really an honest answer.
Truth hurts. Maybe not as much as jumping on a bicycle with a seat missing, but it hurts...

I like my Garmin HCx because it takes a MicroSD card. I've been able to record everything for 12 hour days for three days at a time on a pair of high capacity rechargeable AA batteries.
For day hikes try one of the new fangled GPS phones. As long as you can get back to a charger after a day outside it'll be good enough.
Be nice to me. I'm a rug muncher.

GPS receiver technology is undergoing a shift. With Google Maps and GIS software the idea of fixed unit with proprietary software is dying.

There are only two reasons to buy a unit. First if it easily and quickly downloads up to date maps of either city data (like Baghdad) or topo the second is battery life. You will carry more in batteries than the GPS unit. Personally I love using my damn Blackberry for domestic use and switch over to a Garmin for foreign use.

Depending on your use you can also make your own maps

I bought a GPSMAP 60CSx and it’s been pretty good to me. I learned the hard way even though I been tough many times, to back up GPS units with paper maps and a pencil. Also something to think about, good for the GPS units I found out “at the same time” is an extra battery or a hand crank charger.

These days I wouldn't buy anything if it can't import and export Google Earth standard .KML files...

Garmin. When I upgrade to something newer than my several year old GPSMAP76C, it will do what RYP and thewalrus just mentioned.

I have a Verizon Droid phone. Or some call it an Android. If you get a newer nice phone with the Android OS on it, you have a really nice GPS. It integrates with Google Maps (can show you locatoin while you walk through a city toward destination), and also is a regular GPS. There are mounts for the phone just like a GPS.

It is the nicest GPS I have ever had, and I have had a good number of $$$ ones.

Also you "ALWAYS" have your phone right? So you always got your GPS.
