"Jungle" boots - help needed!!!!!

Postby svizzerams » Thu Sep 02, 2010 1:58 pm

Looking for recommendations - currently favoring the Altama 3LC Black Jungle Mil Spec Boot (vibram sole). Anyone here willing to share any experience or opinions with these types of boots. First issue being that I'm female and there aren't many boots of this nature made specifically for women so have to order mens sizes. I wear size 10-10.5-11R depending on the brand/style in womens (yeah yeah I know I have big feet, but I'm also tall) - I just recieved the Altama in size 9. Beautiful boot - too big - will be reorder 8 and 8.5 to compare. This is one disadvantage of living in the middle of no where. Can't get to 'em to try them on first. So if any of my fellow flaggers have suggestions for footwear for jungle hiking I'm all ears - doesn't have to be Altama - but there may be an option out there I haven't considered.

Sadly Altberg Boots are in the UK which only magnifies the distance shopping problem

If you wanted boots that you could remove and put on again easily and quickly (as I think you might), it might be the time to consider boots with a buckle or even Velcro rather than laces (or does Velcro not work when it's sodden?). I know nothing about specialised boots for the jungle, but from my occasional jungle experiences I'd go for the lightest possible and ones you can just sluice the mud off easily when you stop for the night.

USCav has Condor jungles for 20$ a pop. Order 2 pair and be tits for under 50$. I wear Converse in LATAM, but I'm fucking weird like that.
I am the object of criticism around the world. But I think that since I am being discussed, then I am on the right track.

You might want to consider a waterproof desert boot or something completely made of leather, then put as much impregnation spray/grease on them and wear putties if you walk through rainforest or swamps. Nothing is worse than getting trenchfoot. It's like placing your feet in warm water for three hours until the skin looks like a sponge, and the next day is like walking on needles. And if you're not careful and change socks frequently, it also happens quckly in temperate climates, even in winter. "Jungle boots" are BS in my opinion. Pure desert boots or something light but waterproof are the way to go if you don't want to end up vietnam-style drilling holes in your issued crappy footwear. If you are traveling in the drier tropics any desert boot will do the job, but if there's hiking involved try a model that doesn't go all the way up your leg, just above the ankle will be way more comfortable in uneven terrain. For hiking in hot climates I like European brands, look up Meindl, Lowa, Haix, Converse, Aigle, Altberg and the lot. But I don't think you get them in the US, too bad. The thing is that you won't find reasonably priced, high quality boots in the US exept mil spec ones, bot these tend to be uncomfortable when compared to their European counterparts.
Don't try to save money when buying boots and socks. Carry plenty of spares of the latter. Even one nasty blister can immobilize you for days in the tropics if not prevented or treated correctly quickly.
Happy travels

Whatever you get buy something with Side-Zips - you will thank me later

And my opinion on selecting combat boots in general:

recommend 3 considerations

1) sole is important. i had bad experiences with a supposedly "jungle boot" that had terrible grip; several cuts after a tumble on a rocky trail in a monsoon convinced me.

2) drainage also a must. Don't worry about gortex and several layers of waterproof, if you need that then you are not really going into the jungle.

3) laces. i would put my money on laces, versus zipper. laces are replaceable with paracord or something; a zipper is not. And with a wet boot, and the expansion/ contraction of your feet/socks/boots, you may need to loosen or tighten often. plus once a zipper breaks, you could be having troubles.

of course this all depends on what you're doing and for how long

What about old-school Nam' jungle boots?

Because pretty much all of today's wars are in the desert no one is making any new versions of Jungle Boots

As a jungle boot wearer veteran (20 yrs in the Army wearing them in Panama, Korea, and other jungly places), strongly recommend the Altama "old style." Altama website calls them "Olive Drab Jungle Vulcanized Boot - Domestic." Get the made in the USA boot. will break in like running shoes. BTW: Panama tread sole far superior to that of the Siera sole for "grippage."

If looking for most modern jungle boot, check OTB jungle boots available from US Cav. Pricey but seem to be good. I have the OTB Bootistan mtn boot & quality, albeit made in China, is very good.
