Movies I'll watch again

Postby ktrout » Thu Feb 03, 2011 8:33 am

Instead of ratings, I have a different metric. Here's a list of movies I'd watch more than once. Some would say that a few of these are a bit lowbrow and maybe even stupid, but they're entertaining nonetheless. In no particular order:

A Fish Called Wanda (Awesome comedy that goes right to the heart of British/American stereotypes)
Bourne series (Identity, Supremacy, Ultimatum). They've out-Bonded Bond. Best Bond films ever.
Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
Ronin (slow at times, but they rock out with the cars)
Clint Eastwood (the Spaghetti Westerns and Dirty Harry series)
Ocean's Eleven (remake, like George Clooney, but save the pics for the 99 Most Desirable Men thread that I can ignore.
Good Will Hunting (I think Matt Damon is a pretty decent actor, again, pics for the 99 Most Desirable Men thread).
Hunt for Red October
Indiana Jones (Lost Ark and the third one. Number two is like fingers on a chalkboard and number three is only so-so).
Romancing the Stone

Not on this list:
Anything with that guy who used to play a male cheerleader on SNL.

Pretty close, would consider watching again:
Ben Stiller flics. Not nearly as irritating as that other guy.

Pretty short list. Gotta think of some more, but one of this board's femme fatales will have to open up a 99 Most Desirable Men thread so I can link to it for their benefit.
Be nice to me. I'm a rug muncher.

My favorite Eastwood movie might actually be Pale Rider. I once coded a networked media player and it was my test video.
I don't like a lot of movies before 1970, and even fewer before 1960. They start getting into the dark ages of American censorship.
Charade is one of my favorites, though. Audrey Hepburn was a doll, and Walter Matthau was one of the all time great actors in Hollywood.
Cary Grant was entertaining, although I understand he was a little neurotic in real life.
My ex introduced me to a lot of this older stuff. I don't get why the Chinese concentrate on American culture before color movies.

I'll add:
The Survivors, with both Matthau and Robin Williams.
Also,
The Birdcage.
Be nice to me. I'm a rug muncher.

Yes, the disturbing and creepy is why it's worth watching again and again. It's Spielberg's best film, in my opinion, but whether it's a Spielberg film is open to question, as it was a Kubrick project, shot off of a script Kubrick was working on and in the cold style of Kubrick.

Looking at Caliban's list, I wonder how I left off Apocalypse Now off my list, must have seen that 10 times.

Then there is The Godfather and Godfather II.
The Year of Living Dangerously
Apocalypto, a great movie which did not get the attention it deserves because Mel Gibson acted up in real life.

There are shitloads of movies I love and can watch over and over again, but here are some of my top picks.

•Impromptu. Period piece, which may fool many of you into thinking it's a chick flick. It's not. It's an arts and literature nerd flick. Also, funny as hell.
•Orfeu Negro AKA Black Orfeus. I am a total sucker for the classics, and fuck me, this is awesome!
•O Brother, Where Art Thou? I told you, I'm a sucker for classics.
•Big Lebowski
•Throne of Blood. What don't you like about it Caliban? It's one of my favorite Kurusawa films.
•American In Paris
•All That Jazz
•Paris, Texas
•The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover
•Putney Swope. I was high when I first started watching this, and thought "I'd better start over again sober, cuz this is way too fuckin good to throw away on toasted brain cells." Still fucking amazing while stone cold sober. Then I watched it again while I was high.
We are miserable sinners,
Filthy fuckers,
Arseholes!

After I posted I went and looked at my DVD collection and thought "Damn, LA confidential why did I forget that? "and then I saw taxi driver and the Bourne trilogy and.....
On the subject of LA confidential have you read any of Ellroy's books? His LA quartet which includes confidential is an excellent treatise of 50s police, crime and corruption, especially of course givig pride of place to Dudley Smith whe saw "violence as a necessary adjunct to law enforcement" . What some call the Smith trilogy are superb - Clandestine, and two from the LA Quartet - LA confidential and The Big Nowhere.

Any doubt about reading them is blown away with the opening paragraph to LA Confidential -

An abandoned auto court in the San Berdoo foothills; Buzz Meeks checked in with ninety-four thousand dollars, eighteen pounds of high-grade heroin, a 10-gauge pump, a .38 special, a .45 automatic and a switchblade he'd bought off a pachuco at the border - right before he spotted the car parked across the line: Mickey Cohen goons in an LAPD unmarked, Tijuana cops standing by to bootjack a piece of his goodies, dump his body in the San Ysidro River.

Hooked from there on in
"If you sit still the birds shit on you, even Buddha, life's short so get out there and do something"
"My life has no purpose, no direction, no aim, no meaning, and yet I’m happy. I can’t figure it out. What am I doing right?" Snoopy

Ah, yes. LA Confidential. Almost anything with Kevin Spacey in it is awesome. This brings up Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil, which also happens to be an Eastwood production. Se7en and American Beauty are a little disturbing to me, though.
Also, The Usual Suspects was phenomenal.

I also just watched Men Who Stare at Goats and thought it was hysterical.
Jeremiah Johnson is also on my list.
Reese Witherspoon is also a favorite of mine. Legally Blonde is a great film.
