Hennessy Hammock

Has anyone had any experience with these Hammock tents in the field? I have been looking at them for my solo trips, which are becoming more frequent. I have seen some youtube information but I want to hear from my BFC posters.

I only can comment on the mosquito hammock "expedition model", which I would say is fantastic for keeping bugs away from you - but it will take a little extra time making sure it's adjusted correctly (fairly tight to the trees) and you will need to position a tarp over the hammock (again, set up right to avoid turning into a fish). I would recommend you at least compare the two hammocks before you order a Hennessy.

My best friend just spent 5 months in one on the Appalachian trail. He said it was pretty great in that it allowed many more camp options than a traditional tent would, but that it was super cold when the temperature dropped. He still needed a pad (for warmth), and would even drape a tarp to minimize wind flowing underneath..

They're super comfortable. Beats the hell out of sleeping on the ground. Airflow underneath can sap warmth, though.

If you have the time you can easily make one out of 1.9 oz ripstop nylon. I found directions on-line somewhere but now I make them how I like them after a bunch of trial and error. The only sewing involved is hemming your initial 120 x 60" hammock body, but you can skip that step until after you get out of the prototype stage and figure out what you like.

I've been using my Mosquito Expedition a lot over the past month and a half. Very comfortable but it is hard to keep the sides away from your body. I've started using my small bicycle cargo nets or other hooks on the loops instead of the strings that came with it. Works better that way. Some small bungy cords would work well too.

I've been thinking about poles for my hammock for use in deserts and such. Kind of thinking I could use a couple of collapsible camera tripods.

I would still rather sleep on a sheet of plywood.

I actually find these survival hammocks pretty damned comfortable, but each to their own. It beats sleeping on the ground.

Getting them nice and taught is the trick. Too much slack promotes droopy butt and droopy butt bad.
