THINKPADS

The BFC recommends: Ex-lease Lenovo T60, T61 or X60 Thinkpads.

Go to eBay, buy one for $150, buy a new 9-cell battery ($30) for it, put Linux Mint or Ubuntu 11.04 on it. Thinkpads are rugged enough for most travel and the keyboard is excellent.

Thank you for that Mr. Walrus

seconded. used those during my gig in alaska a few years back (with windows though, as it was a work computer and i didn't get to choose). toughest standard laptop outside the toughbooks, and not nearly as much of a hassle to carry around.

you tell em you feeling like something even more important arrived breathing

Thinkpads are great. I have only had two laptops where I can write quickly and not do that weird "accidentally highlight everything you wrote and then erase it all" accident and one was a Thinkpad with a Pentium II 266 and the other is my iBook G4.

Good bit of gear and fairly field friendly. I had the IBM version and it did the job; light enough too. It's no Panasonic Toughbook, but it's good enough for the few coins you will chuck at it.

I've had an employer-issued T60 for 5 years and it's still functioning okay. Seems quite robust - it has travelled quite a bit and swallowed lots of dust. However, I disagree with the keyboard quality praise. I am about to get my third keyboard soon. On both previous ones the keys' white colour came off after two years of use. (No I don't have excessively long fingernails.) Also, the raised edges of the keys slowly but steadily make deep scratches in the screen whenever the laptop is closed.

A valid critique of a keyboard Buffybot, but my point was typing ability. Thinkpads were very forgiving to my style of typing unlike my cheapo Everex and every Dell I was issued at work.

Agreed. My work laptop has one and I hate it.

agreed, in so far it's the ones made by IBM. had one for 6 years and never let me down. Thinkpad got shit though since it was sold to Lenovo. bought one in 2010 and have been rather disappointed with it, though I am a very weird intensive user usually having 200+ browser tabs open...
