Specifications of Surveillance Cameras

Postby buffybot_in_beirut » Tue Feb 21, 2012 10:23 am

I have seen a certain type of security camera and need to know what this thing can do. It is not the old-style camera box with a little hood above the lens, where it's clear where the front is. Instead, from a vertical pole with an inverted U-shaped end at the top you have a hemipherical, transparant glass (or plastic) cover facing down. I presume the lens(es) is/are inside. But what direction does it face? Can it rotate 360 degrees? Tilt up and down? What's the reach (tele-zoom capability)? Light sensitivity (night-vision capability)? All I know is that thing must be evil because you never know which way it is looking! :-)

Or is that outer shape just a standard way of building modern cameras, and it is impossible to say whether the stuff inside is primitive crap or a high-tech Mossad/CIA/Tom Cruise toy?

Any websites where I can browse descriptions and compare specifications?

Thanks everyone.

Best way to answer that question: climb the pole with some snips and a dremel tool (while wearing a mask and black clothes of course), then steal the son of a bitch, take it home, open it up and have a look inside. Make sure to cut the steel before you cut the cable, so you can get out quick. :)

Thanks, vagabond. That website looks useful.

I couldn't google the damned thing because I don't know how it is called. My unspecific keywords "security camera" brought up all sorts of hits of dubious-looking online stores in China that try to sell crap to geeky James Bond wannabees.
