Russias New AK

Postby Jefe » Tue Mar 06, 2012 10:05 pm

It looks like a serious leap forward while keeping the good parts of the older platform. If they use the dual gas impingement system from the AK108 it will be that much more interesting.

Anybody work with any of these?

Maybe Eric Holder can buy all the surplus and once again team up with ATF for Operation Faster and more Furiouser and sell them to Mexican Drug Cartels so they can justify an assault rifle ban since their first try failed.

there's been various modernized AKs over the years. Other than the well known AK-74 introduced in the 70s, which uses a totally different round...

the AK-107 is a modernized AK-74:

Are you an AK Shooter Walrus? Have you tried any of them out besides the 74?

I am wondering when they hit full scale production if this will give us a price drop here in the US as the supply train for older models is almost used up.

Are you talking about the AK 12 ?

BTW they still have warehouses stock full of 74's.

Izhmash has officially unveiled the first working prototype of the AK-12 Assault Rifle. According to Max Popenker there will be two models, a Light model (5.45x39mm, 5.56x45mm and 7.62x39mm) that accepts all magazines that work with existing AK rifles, as well as a new 60 round quad stack magazine, and a Heavy (7.62x51mm) model that will use a new magazine.

The rifle's major new features are ...

Ambidextrous forward charging handle.
Smaller ejection port.
New safety switch.
New fire control switch with three modes of fire (single shot, 3 round burst and full auto).
New hinged top cover. The cover is a lot more rigid that the previous AK rifles.
Quad picatinny rails.
Folding and length adjustable stock.
Ergonomic pistol grip (with a decent radius between trigger guard and grip).
New muzzle brake that attaches to standard NATO 22mm threading.
Improved barrel rifling.

I moved this topic to Guns & Weapons figuring that John O of the AK Forums might have something to add.

Yep Hitoru. And I have heard that they are ceasing new production of older versions so was thinking there will be a glut of affordable AKs in a few years when the surplus gets sold.

Not sure though as the importation rules would have to change to get them from Russia, but its in the interests of the US to get them off the street somehow.

Have you looked at the dual piston version? Seems quite interesting to me anyways.

Of interest - it is a nice looking gun - the hand grip looks pretty good. Barrel is a tad long looking, but I suppose it wouldn't take much to fix that.

As for the 107 &108s with the dual piston the design is flawed somehow , that it doesn't extract or eject correctly, or that having two lesser mechanically-timed gas pistons was just asking for trouble; the 107 & 108's are somehow prone to failure. That being said, even if these were jam-o-matics and ugly as fuck I would love to spend some time with one.

Newtonian physics is pretty clear on this one: the recoil would be nil.

I want to play with the AN-94.

What are the chances of this new baby making it onto the flags of some countries?

I'm sure the Ruskies will be selling them to anyone with cash.
The Venezuelans have secured rights to manufacture the AK 103.

it does look a bit long and thin. As you say, easily fixed. I've never liked the overly long comp on the end and now its NATO thread compatible. The cheese graters could go too.

Tell you one thing, the AK is in my opinion one seriously underated rifle in terms of accuracy and performance. It's legendary for its reliability of course, but you can reach out with those rifles quite well. At least in the US, there is such an overwhelming emphasis on technology/technical ability, they have all but forgotten what you can do with good leadership, disciplined troops who are well trained.

I had one group doing just as well at 500 meters with AKs than I would have expected them to do with 16s/4s. Its more about Basic Marksmanship Training than anything.

Right around the time we are looking for something much different than the M16 to move on to.

And if the one poster thought the Carl Gustov transition took years, LOL.
