The two guys with the peace signs remain hopeful.

Me and my mucker used to sit down to a lot of these in our Shiekh liaison team days in Basrah/Maysan in 2004. You'd be swiping the cockroaches off of your neck as you scooped up great gobs of sweaty mutton and rice, and that unpasteurised yoghurt they do.

Good form was to quietly double drop a couple of immodium pre-scoff, and enjoy the undeniably tasty feast. One day I forgot to take my arse meds but didn't get ill anyway, well, not until next day when I bought a bottle of Pepsi from a stall in Qurnah that tasted a bit odd. My bangle and stomach flowed like the muddy confluence of the Euphrates/Tigris itself after that one. I've been a Diet Coke man ever since.

Cheers

Gotta have the scarf. Nothing says 'I'm down with the locals' like the scarf. 'When I wear this scarf, I am magically transformed. I am no longer a gringo. I am a kindred soul to all around me. They recognize me as such and treat me just like they treat each other.'

The scarf and the sport sandal, the two biggest Don'ts in travel history.

Have to agree with the Swain on this one.

Like the dopey dorises, who within hours of de-bussing in Kabul have just got to buy a (always cheap shit Pakistani copy) Pakol and cotton dismaal and then proceed to cut about the place wearing them, confusing and/or annoying the locals who expect a doris to be in a Burka or at least in long skirted suit & scarf, but not in man drag.

Also, a 6'4" blonde mate of mine in Iraq, whilst working semi-covert in the recce team decided to go native when the IPA threatened to strip off the dark tinting on our car windows. So, matey buys a huge white dishdasha, gets it tailored so, like a hospital theatre gown, it is put on over the body and velcroed down the back. Underneath he has body armour, chest rig & mags, radio, 9mm and other bits and bobs. He ends up looking like some giant mad scientist, and gets the hump when I tell him so.

Then the daft cunt tries to save his outfit by putting on a shemagh, he looked so conspicuous that our local employees were queuing up to have a laugh at him. Finally he gave up and just went out in his boots, trousers, shirt and chest rig, at least it was all dark coloured.

Those cunts knew us and our motors anyway, so whatever we wore we got dicked every time we went down the town.

EDIT: I did buy local scarves in both Iraq & Afghan, they made/make great table covers and dust covers for the laptop

Cheers

I rock the shorts and high socks, you get more comfort and a modicum of leech protection. Plus if its good enough for Tony Hawk its good enough for me I guess.
