useless unless you're in north america, really.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TerreStar-1

the company responsible for it recently went bankrupt. they're trying to find a new market in M2M (machine to machine) communications. an iridium phone or inmarsat isatphone are vastly preferable alternatives.

it's a nice L-band satellite, capability wise, but the handhelds are junk and don't offer anything you can't get with truly global coverage from a proper satellite phone.

now they're trying to recycle its L-band earth-to-space spectrum which was licenced by the FCC for terrestrial earth-to-earth broadband communications. the management team behind dish network has some plans in that direction, similar to what lightsquared tried.

yes, geostationary satellites do occasionally change ownership after launch and commissioning. for example GE-23:

or protostar-1, the company which purchased it and launched it went bankrupt, it was purchased by intelsat later.

since it costs about a minimum of $150 million to launch a satellite, and they last for an average 13-18 years, it's entirely possible for a company to go belly-up during that time and the satellite to change ownership at a later date.

It wouldn't have gone bust (pun intended) if it had been called Pornostar-1
I'm not really a proper reporter, due to the chronic lack of discipline, negligible attention span, and a certain juvenile difficulty taking serious things seriously.

well, it was located directly over indonesia, a nation of 300 million people.... so, 150 million males, a significant portion of which must be sex crazed teenagers. unfortunately the average indonesian does not have a credit card to sign up for a $10/month subscription porno site yet.
