10 Photographers You Should Ignore

This article originally appeared on LPV Magazine. We thought our readers would enjoy it so we asked authors Bryan Formhals and Blake Andrews if we could re-post it here, to which they graciously agreed.

Formhals got the idea for this column after reading The 10 Most Harmful Novels for Aspiring Writers. He came up with five photographers for his list and asked Andrews to contribute the other five. Here they are.

Ansel Adams

Adams created some remarkable images and he wrote the book (literally) on photographic technique. Yet on the whole he’s probably done more harm than good for photography. How many young photographers have fussed over which zone to put the shadows in while the light fades and the photo disappears? More importantly, how many perfectly exposed black and white vistas of snow-capped peaks or rivers snaking into the background do we need to see? Yes, nature is majestic. We get it. Saint Ansel showed us, and he did it better than you ever will, so move on already or we’ll score your performance as a negative.

-- Blake Andrews

What a fucken pinko. Ansel Adams is part of American History...

True Story...many years ago, my mentor had met Ansel and his son at Denny's of all places. Said he was a regular joe and humble.
The one thing I remember in the conversation was that his son, of Ansel Adams, said that he should sell some of the photos in posters form. They figured they'd make a few hundred bucks...

I'll give you that, led me to this collection of different photographers' work. I'm sure I know that bird from Hampstead.

Yeah, wigga please, just take the fuckin' picture. The beauty of digital photography is that you can take all you want and throw 99% away if you want. My secret is that I know nothing about art or photography and I take everything with my phone cam. But that Ansel Adams shot is awesome.
Be nice to me. I'm a rug muncher.

I don't mind the Adams stuff. He inspired a lot of people to do better, which is no bad thing, but much of the rest of the snappers created an army of pretentious cunts who couldn't see what HC-B etc were seeing and went around blindly and badly imitating them. Wankers, all of them. I never rated HC-Bs stuff, of all the Magnum artsy guys. I rate Martin Parr (of the artsy Magnum arm) much higher. No one snaps real England better than he does.

ha. Most of those artists, including Adams, are high influential. Nice spoof article though.

I like Newton's stuff, but from a hormonal, teenage boy perspective.

I refer to his models as danger sluts, because it looks like they're sluts for danger. The gallery in Berlin is worth a stop after some beer in the park next door.

His framing, composition, depth and orientation are excellent, but the leg shot is a little too fabricated, however, it's an interesting choice to make it dutch.

Personally I am of the opinion ignore is a strong word and this article is simply attempting to drum up a little controversy, thus increasing readership. Also, I agree with Ktrout - just take the fucking picture. Some of the best shit I've ever shot has been when I was dead tired and basically didn't give a fuck. Shooting without thinking
