Nothing really. This happened during the first few days I was in China, and I was a bit intimidated. I warmed up to them after about a week. Its a nice change of pace. I think they might even be cleaner than Western toilets considering you don't have to touch anything when you use one.

They are awkward to learn but they are much better for you - they line your bowels up much better, with the bonus being no hemorrhoids from sitting and straining....

Seriously. Look it up. Squat toilets align the bowels in a much more natural position, and the lack of pressure from sitting and straining is a big reason hemorrhoids are not nearly the problem in Asia that they are in the Western world.

There ya go. For the record, I prefer the western toilet because that is what I was raised using - but there is no denying that the squat toilet has it right as far as the science of shitting is concerned.
