Where in the world to propose marriage?

Postby ktrout » Sat Jul 28, 2012 5:21 am

I have a bit of a list of ideas. In no particular order:
* TianAnMen Square/Forbidden City
* Moscow Kremlin and the surrounding area.
* Piazza in Rome, although there are lots of really cool places in Italy. Yeah, I know. Wasn't that in a commercial not too long ago? On one of those funny boats in Venice?
* Parthenon, other areas in Greece?
* Niagara Falls.
* Angkor Wat. Never been, but it just sounds cool.
* Would the Eiffel Tower be too cliche?
* Marin Headlands, north of San Francisco.
* Northern California Redwoods. Maybe Founder's Grove?
* By Old Faithful Geyser in Yosemite would be kind of cute.
* Environs of the Old North Church in Boston, USA would be cool.
* Peak of Mauna Loa/Mauna Kea
* Karlovskii Most (Karl's Bridge) in Prague. Maybe the old city center, too. Lots of cool places in Prague.
* Old town center, Bamberg.
* Old town center, Krakow.
* Grounds of the Mackinac Grand Hotel, Michigan, USA.
* Chichen Itza, Yucatan.
Be nice to me. I'm a rug muncher.

what about verona, italy, under the famed romeo & juliet balcony.

Good idea. I drove through Verona last year, actually.

Probably a place that is a) near and dear to the sig. other and b) would have some meaning or story value within the context of your relationship. Regardless, pre-congrats.

That is pretty perfect.
I proposed in front of about 600 or so people at Heathrow Airport.....thank God one of them married me.

Ah, so that's how it's done. Screw romance and go for the numbers. The Olympics might be worth something after all...

Do the Eiffel tower. It's a location that can't be romantically topped and the story of it will instantly blow away just about everyone. Bam, instant good feelings with all the inlaws, close friends, etc...

No, Stonehenge looks cool as hell but actually looks better far away than up close.

This is my favorite ancient site in England:

Lhasa, Tibet.

That had occurred to me. I'm not sure I have the balls to go back to China again. Especially Tibet. I guess I could try to schedule it between one of their crackdowns...

Bora Bora, if you can afford it. Not in one of the resorts. There is a viewpoint hill in the north of the main island with quite simply the most beautiful view in the world, if your're into the stuff (ocean, islets, palm trees).

Otherwise, as Woodsman said, the Maldives (but you need to do a lot of research to find an island that is objectively good and fits your personal preferences) or the Cook Islands (One Foot Island on Aitutaki?).

On top of one of the temples at Pagan, Burma, at dusk.

On the bridge from Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) to Livingstone (Zambia).

On the equator (to get away from the tourist riffraff, select Rolas Island in Sao Tome).

Point Barrow, Aaska.

Angkor is too crowded to be romantic, but you could rent that (anchored) hot air ballon just for yourself to have privacy and a great view.

On the rooftop terrace of any building in the old town of Sana'a at sunset.

En route on the Trans-Siberian railway.

I proposed at the remote ruins of a castle in the Austrian Alps. It was the refuge of St Romedius (he rides a bear or some shit) and very perfect. He is now the patron saint of our (heathen/agnostic) marriage. The more unique and obscure, the better - I think.

Hey, as the bfc's most romantic flagger of 2011, I'm keeping my vote with the eiffel tower.

Also, make sure she isn't going to say no before you leave. I hear that makes for a really awkward flight home.
