Angola: Minefields and Diamonds

Postby Ozymandias » Sun Apr 08, 2012 1:59 pm

I'm just back from a two week trip around the lesser visited parts of Angola. Spent my first week touring the HALO Trust de-mining facilities in the south-east of the country, second week up in the north-east on the border with the Congo, where all the diamonds come from!

Week 1 (Minefields): https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... b21cf13723

Week 2 (Diamonds): https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... b27634e22f

I might write something about it eventually, but in the mean time, if anyone wants any information just let me know!

Did you bring back any diamonds?
Or raid the cemeteries for kid's skulls for your mantelpiece?
I'm not really a proper reporter, due to the chronic lack of discipline, negligible attention span, and a certain juvenile difficulty taking serious things seriously.

Great pics! Who was the N'Gola? Not every day you see a zebra being taken out in someone's living room.

Can't believe HALO trust is still milking it all these years on, still providing raison d'etres for earnest lost souls while the locals re-seed the minefields to keep the cash cow mooing. Mines are like so last century dude.

Thanks for sharing. How would I get started preparing and planning for such a trip?

Erm...it would take a while!

You'd need a contact within the NGO as I doubt they'd be happy just showing a random around a minefield. Also, getting into Angola is a nightmare, as you will see from all the posts on visa issues somewhere like the Thorn Tree Forum. You need a sponsor at this end sorting things out, sending letters of invitation etc. This is a very difficult place to travel around as an independent visitor. PM me if you're serious about visiting and I'll give some more detailed advice, but it will be a long, expensive process.
