Yeah, I think he's dead or well on the way there. Bummer. I was watching some Miami Venezuelans on a talk show discussing how "even the opposition in Venezuela has a vested interest in keeping up appearances that he's alive" because of stability, stock markets, oil, etc. At least for a while. Which means the USA, which backs Venezuela's political opposition very delicately, lest the oil supplies be fucked with, is also going to avoid any official speculation. If there's no one in power there (or in Miami) who wants to call the emperor out for wearing no clothes, well, no one's going to do so (other than the rumor mill, aka Twitter).

But Fidel's always very careful to pose for photo ops periodically, particularly when people are speculating about his death.

With a newspaper, so people have "proof" (as much as is possible in a photoshopped world)
that the pic of him is current.

And his people would be pumping Hugo up with steroids and painkillers for the same purpose.... if it were possible. So clearly it's not, Hugo's too far gone to even do a photo shoot in a track suit. *le sigh*

And, he's back! And alive. More or less.

CARACAS -- Joyful supporters of Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez crowded outside a military hospital in the capital Monday after the cancer-stricken leader's surprise return from Cuba where he had undergone a fourth operation more than two months ago.

Chávez arrived at Caracas International Airport at 2:30 a.m. and was immediately whisked to the heavily guard Carlos Arvelo hospital.

"We have arrived again to Venezuela," Chávez tweeted upon arrival. "Thank God. Thanks to my beloved country."
