ive always hated fasting, both as a mormon (first sunday every month like 2-3 meals) and then in iran for ramadan the shittiest month to be out and about anywhere ever. i love freedom, including the freedom to eat. likewise i only say happy end of ramadan. condolences fellow muslims who have been for whatever reasons coerced into starving yourselves for a god who doesnt give a shit about your pointless food sacrifices. maybe next time choose a better god or at least choose which rules you're going to obey more wisely.

You have to admire their discipline..if anything.
Isn't that what it's about? Structure,discipline....
Maybe this is the reason for a lot of the "first world's" problems.
It's not a bad thing to discipline desires. You don't have to be rid of them.
I guess that's where the more fundamentalist element comes in.

for very few muslims is adherence related to discipline or self control. on the societal level, the tradition rests solidly on legislation/commercial policy and is maintained through social/peer/familial pressure. on the same note generally, for ppl in the west and other places where culture is focused on the individual and the individual is held legally and morally responsible for a smaller and more meaningful set of decisions and actions, us such ppl exert way more self-control and discipline on a daily basis goin about our lives than those - such as much of the world's muslim population - marinatin in collective and communal societies where what you do or dont do is based on how other ppl will judge you, talk about you, and maybe shun you, not based on your own level of belief in or personal dedication to society's rules.

it's the same reason arabs are famous for goin wild when they visit places without such backwards and restrictive laws. they don't know what the fuck to do with themselves in a free society, or how to behave when the rules of life aren't being shoved down their throats and enforced by dictators, mullahs, fathers, and peers.

Disciplined? Seems to me that large numbers of muslims lose their cool at any excuse.

Fasting as a spiritual practice is not reserved for Islam, many religions avail of such rituals. There is a clause in the Koran, I know because an educated Shia Muslim told me, that if as a Muslim you're in lands where Islam is not dominant then you're not supposed to fast if you don't want to and you can even eat pork.

Ramadan, like Christmas, is an industry. The Haj, for example, makes many Muslims very rich. The Alevi Muslims have it right: They don't go to mosque, they don't fast, they're not required to go to Mecca and they drink alcohol whenever they want. Nor do the Alevi sit well with the predominant Muslim culture/government. Never have but they stick to their guns.

Yeah, discipline. Like some revolutionary new diet.

Any gods that care about what, when and how I eat or drink should go preach instead to those hungry kids in Africa, the ones they used to show on television.

Don't feel like that el3so. Those kids in Africa (and elsewhere) are there to show people something.
You can't know about compassion without at least seeing suffering.
Their souls live on.
What about someone who lives with a tormented soul for 90 years...or possibly forever?
Who would you rather be?

Notice how those kids can still smile with their distended bellies?
...because their souls can still smile.

The sun is shining, loved ones are near, there's beer in the fridge, food in my belly, weed in my pipe and money in my pocket to buy more of anything except loved ones or sunshine. I do not see the need to feel tormented at all, it's something probably best left to angsty teens.

But those African kids are probably just as hungry.

For this year it's over so Eid M'barrak motherlovers!

Plenty of supposedly homophobic dudes in dresses out and about today, none where I live though.
