Motorcycles.

Postby rickshaw92 » Fri Jul 19, 2013 12:20 pm

Thinkin bout gettin one. Not now, I don't even have a care license much less a motorcycle license. Was lookin at Harleys and Enfields. A bottom Harley would cost about £ 8000 where as a top end Enfield Bullet would cost £ 5000.

I dunno.

Opinions on these bikes please.

What kind of riding do you want to do? Where?

I would ride it round England on my day off. Lots to see within 100 miles of London and rail tickets are a bitch. I also might live out of zone 1 in a few years as the gig I have may not last forever. I would also go regularly to the continent too.

So mostly touring? I'd consider the Enfield or perhaps a Suzuki V-Strom 650cc - you can set this up nicely with light luggage for traveling about (even camping, although I don't know how nice that would be in UK and the continent). Woodsman has one and is quite happy with it.

There is a great film about riding an Enfield 350cc up in the Himalayas: Riding Solo to the Top of the World. (http://www.dirttrackproductions.com/). Gave me lots of respect for the Enfield bikes....

I also like the Kawasaki Versys 650cc. Or a Triumph Bonneville T-100.

You can buy a good 750 shadow that is 7 years old in the US for like 3 grand - I have one I bought a while ago, don't ride it much but it is a good bike

I say go Japanese, 5+ years old and you can get a good bike - also you are smart so I am sure you can learn how to do minor repairs on a used bike

Both are overpriced IMHO. why not get a cheap little dual sport? fun to ride, cheap to run, easy to repair.

I second M-A's advice. There are tons of awesome bikes in London. I was quite impressed by the choices. My opinion is that a 400cc dual sport is hard to beat. I definitely wouldn't go Enfield. I've heard the things break down often. I don't know what all bikes are available there. Get one that's comfortable & good on fuel!

Since it is your first bike (or first in a long time) it would be prudent to buy used. Only buy new if you are fully committed to owning the bike at least three years.

I'm with everyone else in this thread (except ktrout). The best fit for your type of riding will be a 400-700cc Japanese dual-sport. That sort of bike will be agile in the city and comfortable for long distance continental adventures.

If you can find a KLR650 used in good shape that should fit your needs. An xr600, xr650, dr400 (I think that is what M-A has) might work but they're fairly dirtbike-ish.

Cruising the UK bike sites of japanese manufacturers these should be a consideration:

https://www.suzuki-gb.co.uk/motorcycles/motorcycles/adventure-sports-touring/vstrom/v-strom-650-abs-tourer/ That is what I have, very happy with it.
http://www.yamaha-motor.eu/uk/products/motorcycles/adventure/xt660tr.aspx Looks cool, otherwise i have no idea about it.

If you want a Harley then look no further than the MT350.

Okay just read what you actually want to do with it. A Harley is not the bike for that, fun in a city (ish) but dogshit awful the minute you get near a motorway or fast A road.

Best value bike bar none is the deeply untrendy but reliable and plenty fast (for a noob like you) GSX750F (Suzuki). Cheap insurance too because rocket riders don't tend to commit suicide on them and pikeys are too busy nicking R1s.

If you don't like it then just bin it and get your ghey Sportster (and book yourself in to the docs for whitefinger - the occupational ailment of road drillers)

Just picked up a 1975 BMW R 75/6. Going to turn it into a cafe.
