I was on the Canadian Junior Men's Cross country team and this is what we did in Paris in 1980. I ended up 39th.
I competed against the guy who got third,Ed Eyestone, the next year in the NCAA's. I ran for the Badgers. That's why I ended up in Wisconsin.

But I still prefer the Netherlands...for various reasons.

Been to France and Netherlands and would go to the Netherlands 10 times out of 10. NL is my second favorite place in the world.

Netherlands! I don't understand why people are so obsessed with Paris. It's dirty and boring. Just my 2 cents.

It's nice to see the Dutch Tourist Board on here.

If you don't have the option of going to both places it's usually best to follow the crowds unless you have some special interests or deliberately want to go off the beaten track. I mean, there must be a reason why Paris is the world's most popular (or 2nd or 3rd) tourist destination. As for doing both, a train from Paris to Amsterdam takes between 3 and 5 hours for the fastest connection. Or you can fly. None of that will be cheap, but what in a western European metropolis is? Whatever you do in this area, just avoid Brussels.
=== EDIT. Bummer. Thread from March this year. Guess you've long gone (and returned). Never mind... ====

If you're going in or coming up to their summer I'd say stay away from NL. Everyone is really cool and people are relatively friendly but at that time of year it's absolutely packed with foreign kids getting stoned and the Dutch just see you as another tourist (with a few exceptions of course). I spent a November there though and that was far better than the summer I had there on a separate occasion, people were more open and looking for a chat than at summer. But maybe stupid foreign kids getting high is your thing, they do get pretty loose. Weed is still legal for tourists in Amsterdam but not outside. Plus in summer you'll spend 1/3 of your time in line (usually behind old people who don't know what they're doing).

Having only spent a week in Paris I'd say go there, you'll have to learn some new language and there is just a different vibe. It's Paris and will always be Paris and fuck off if you don't like it. Amsterdam will be whatever you want it if you spend some money and stop trying to speak Dutch.

I've been to Amsterdam a couple of times and loved it. Such an amazingly historic, beautiful city.
I need to see Brussels and Paris at some point.
