The best bit about flying in/out of Afghanistan was when Emirates started flying the route, no more white knuckle flights. Also, helped the air miles tally up.

Before that we were allowed to fly Kam Air only, Ariana was OOB. I had a few scares on Kam as well, from tyres blowing out on landing to passengers fighting over seats, usually locals sitting in the seats of bull-necked yanks on the second leg up from Helmand of a two day journey home. One flight I was told I couldn't take my phone and laptop cables in my hand luggage. Turns out a Yank had tried strangling an Afghan with one earlier that day or the day before. $10 baksheesh and I was good to go.

Worst ever was sitting in Kabul departures one December waiting for Xmas R&R, it was snowing like a cunt outside, and we got delayed until the wee small hours when it suddenly cleared. after boarding the plane the heat onboard was oppressive as the air conditioning was fucked, so off came all the winter gear into the overhead locker. We sat on the plane for another two ours as they tried to clear snow off it, sweating in t-shirts, then they announced that the de-icer had run out and the flight was cancelled. I had to ring our ops manager, who got the duty driver out of his maggot to come pick me up - AFTER I walked the length of the KIA approach road just as it started snowing like a cunt again, it was fucking Baltic too, freezing. I got into bed at 4am, and was up at breakfast in the team house amid much hilarity, then back to the airport at 8am to scramble unto another overcrowded Kam Air flight. I upgraded to business from Dubai to London, that made up for it, and got mullered on the way home.

Cheers

I'd prefer the smell of napalm in the morning to that mix of kerosine and de-icing fluid.

That airport feeling is very familiar. Fuck there are some horrible places on earth, but none quite so horrible as 3am and no particular plan on where you're staying. Low moment that sticks in my mind is watching the last bus of the day leave town in a fucked up Balkan town as the sleet really set in. Times like that you wonder what the fuck you're doing with your life. Thanks to bureaucratic fuckwittery I was almost always Ariana and could never summon the energy for the argument; I used to look longingly at Kam Air while the Molle crowd trooped on board, leaving me with chicken farmers and Talibs on their R&R. Good times.

The Airport stories should be a thread in their own right, but it's too late now!

I remember going into Kabul International Airport (KIA...isn't that appropriate!) in the early days. Customs and Immigrations was through a hole blown though the wall by a tank round and there was a guy with a laptop running off a generator there too stoned to care.

One of my jobs I actually got an EU Carrier approved by the EUs version of the TSA to fly in/out of KIA. And my promise of free 1st Class flights went down the shitter as they decided it was too risky. We had a full part of the airport set aside for us and all was a go. Limited access for ANP etc. Off premises baggage check days before your flight, dogs, white boys, some good guys from the Border Patrol. EU approved.

1st Class flights for poor me. No more tires blowing out, flights not even authorized to operate in the EU (Scariana), defective equipment, defective pilots and worst of all Dry Flights with no liquor on board. You would think KAM and the Russian influence would have at least had booze.

And my 1st class dashed by Europenises who shudder at the thought of gunfight. Bacon, liquor, stewardesses...all over...

It still depresses me...

You know how FOX has that show War Stories, with Oliver North? We should have "Drunken War Stories" by "all kinds of Wayward GI's". (Will work for booze). We just need to combine Ollies Program with The Man Show and we would have a winner.

No, but I have a good one about a flight I shared with a bunch of UN staff. So the pilots, who had flown the unfriendly airways of Africa for decades told me and my buddy that they didn't care about weapons, but with UN on board, we had to hide them. I actually had a big suitcase. Off to Lashkar Gah to do a survey for some people operating with zero protection "because the people love us and won't let anything happen to us".

Folding stock AKs, about 30 mags, my "Bag 'O Grenades", poncho liner, socks and whiskey and we are ready to go. All fit in the suitcase which by now weights 1.35 Shit tons. Some little zipperhead comes out and offers to take my bag in front of UN. "No thanks!" Got it. He insists so I get an evil grin and say Sure, go ahead. He grabs it and as he tries to yank it off the ground his shoulder almost separates as me and my buddy are laughing quietly over smirks. He thinks for a second and figures it out.

We land (in a field, not an airfield, a field). USMC comes rolling out to greet us and as the UN people start dwon the stairs I open up the suitcase of pain and throw him his AK and we lock mags and I sling my Bag O Grenades to the horror of the UN People.

And the story isn't even at the funny part yet.

So...I've spent the last few months pulling out young girls at risk of and escaping sexual slavery with ISIS, but RYP and Seeks are "cool" because one is a fucking dumb bitch selling furniture in flyoverville USA and supporting that douchecunt radical Islamic Erdogan, and the other is too busy being handheld in Libya by Barry Soreto's politically placed CIA agents.

Not at all. What any normal man would do.

I'm just tired of the fucking cunts here running off at the mouth, and too fucking chickenshit to put rubber on the road.

LOL; don't sell yourself short Q. You would be the bad guy even if you weren't being discussed.

Just kidding. LOL, "bringing the breath of life into the BFC" could be your new signature line. COL KKW would be proud.

Do you try to be that stupid? I'm the fucking dumb bitch that sells furniture in Cleveland and I want you to tell me when I ever voiced any support for that dictator Erdogan. Never ever have I liked him and I'll like him even less after he makes your boy Trump his bitch.
