Crying over having not invested in Bitcoin is like going to the casino and then crying that you put your money on the wrong colour. You could've made money. You could've lost money. But you probably shouldn't have been in the Casino in the first place. I've never regretted having not done a stupid thing, even if that stupid thing might've accidentally made me rich.

I always tell everyone I made a smart choice, but that the dumb choice would have made me rich.

I mean, seriously:
I am going to spend $60k USD on a computer that will basically print money.

I suspect if I had been crazy enough to blow that kind of cash I probably also would have been so crazy I would have lost it right away too.

Because part of being stupid is not knowing you are stupid. I know I am stupid so in theory that would make me less stupid. Then again, I do stupid things all the time and don't regret them. I think I grow less stupid by doing stupid things and once in a while realising how stupid they are. Some of them involve money.

Not at all. I do stupid things all the time. But I've never thought to myself " I wish I'd done that stupid thing because it could've made me money".

My prediction at the beginning of the pandemic was off. I thought real estate would suddenly become affordable, especially cottages as they are a luxury and I figured in hard times, people would be selling shit they don’t need. Not so! Here, real estate keeps going up, vacation cottages even faster as more people are leaving cities to work remotely.

I also predicted that buy and sell used items would offer great deals. Not only did they INCREASE in price, it’s nearly impossible to even find many items. At least here is like that.

I figure green energy and technology should be s good bet. Paradoxically I also feel just old school petroleum based energy in general has been hit so hard it might also be a good move....cause once restrictions ease, we know the whole world will be doing road trips and flying everywhere.

My current method of smart investing involves reminding the wife not to buy any more useless crap and saving up for a helluva good trip eventually.

I have a private yard with just a school as my backyard neighbor, patio, sunken patio and fire pit.

It's pandemic gold now that people are fleeing "The city" (which is odd because my yard is 20' x 35' Which is small for a US yard but big for a NYC yard.)

We were looking at buying a place right on the Canadian border and building a small "compound" there with mutiple cottages and a main gathering area for laundry and food and socializing but the price went too high for a 7 hour drive. Would have been cool though.

Yeah, that is a big lot for NYC! And the cottage idea sounds cool, it’s all about affordability though. In Canada 90% or more of the population lives close to the southern border, so lots of the development is moving further north at a crazy pace. I had people who wanted to go splits with me on a chunk of land 2-3 hrs north of Toronto years ago.....now for the same price, you’d have to go 10 hrs!! I also hear New York is the highest taxed state. Upstate NY is wicked though by the Adirondacks.

Since the pandemic started, used things like tools went up and became very scarce. Any sort of toy or recreational item like an outdoor trampoline, snowmobile, 4 wheeler. Lumber even went out of stock after the price shot up. But this is more due to the lack of production caused by shutdowns I think. Exercise equipment has gone through the roof. Strange times, I think this year we’ll find out who really has been footing the bill!

Investing in green energy probably isn't a bad idea either, since it will also be an area of Fed investment, but I haven't shifted any money there

Been into windfarms for 15 or so years, do your due diligence, lots of carbon credit BS, deferred gov loans and skewing numbers through tax-breaks bordering on fraud. If it weren't for the subsidies I doubt it is very profitable (don't get me started on solar), it's like that "biological/all natural" label getting used to sell crappy overpriced produce.

I am perfectly fine with acknowledging I keep them around for moral grandstanding reasons. Same with microloans fwiw.

Whole thing is another stark reminder I will not be taking any of it with me, happens every decade or so, guess it'll become more frequent as/if I grow older.

The farmland thing sounds like a lot of work tbh. Laws about someone else tilling it for you create joinder after couple of years, ancient legislation, actual farmers have a different scheme/lobby working for them, there is easier money to be made IMO if you didn't inherit it.

I remember laughing about it a couple of years ago, not exactly living the urban life here, but there is definitely something to be said for a secluded place off the grid (as in not dependent on amenities, not lying low from the law like, for those purposes I'll take my chances renting cash in hand in the sh!ttiest part of a big city).
Prices are pretty ridiculous everywhere but not bound to go down any time soon.
