% Access to Electricity in Africa

I honestly thought it would almost universally be up over 60%. Not even close.

Interesting map. Looks as if I spent most of my Africa time in the high access areas; Kenya, Gabon, Ghana, Morocco, Senegal, though I did quite a few years inTanzania. Friendly place but quite poor. Very little electricity outside of the urban areas.

In Nigeria I know that access is more "theoretical possibility". My mother in law recently lived for 5 months on generator power when the local utility had their transformers blow due to illegal hook-ups.

Didn't think it would be that good. It cut out every few minutes in TZ.

They go to the local bar/restaurant, or charge them in a vehicle

I think if the IEA had the granular data to actually apply their own definitions of what "electricity access" means, then these percentages would be far lower.

"our electricity access databases focus on a simpler binary measure of those that have a connection to an electricity grid, or have a renewable stand-alone system or mini-grid connection of sufficient capacity to deliver the minimum bundle of energy services...at a minimum...enough electricity to power four lightbulbs operating at five hours per day, one refrigerator, a fan operating 6 hours per day, a mobile phone charger and a television operating 4 hours per day, which equates to an annual electricity consumption of 1 250 kWh per household with standard appliances, and 420 kWh with efficient appliances."

There's no chance that 39% of households in Madagascar or 43% of households in Angola have the level of electricity access required to run a fridge 24/7!
