I need a new car.....

Postby Dr. V » Mon Jun 15, 2009 10:18 pm

however I have a limited interested in car showrooms, car salesmen and cars in general (unless they are sleek, fast and on the expensive side).

I need something which has enough boot space for a large suitcase, is suitable to drive around the countryside (think The Wurzels / Combine Harvester http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K-BRNxprK28 territory) and speedy enough to make the fast lane on the motorway. Any suggestions?

Fiat 500!!!!!!

(but I admit I am just saying that because I want one)

I would advise the Mazda Rx8 because I know you like them but the more I read about the fuel economy the more I read things like "17MPG highway? Its much less"

Yeah, they're not practical. Rotaries are clever for racing but they burn a lot of oil (bad emissions), have no torque, and then there's the wonderful rotary gas mileage. It's not even particularly light, not even 200 pounds less than my Corvette which has twice as much horsepower and gets 30mpg highway if I "drive with discretion." I'm sure a light footed individual could get about 20 city.
I liked the previous generation Mazda 3 and 6, but I think they just redesigned them.
Do you like the Mustang? Non-bailout taking American car company with big bore torque goodness.

Mazda 6 or 3 if the size is enough for you

You can get a performance package MPS and four wheel drive and so forth.

The rx8 is not that horrible in gas mileage compared to similar cars.

Fiats are just fucking horrible, if you like 6 sticks next to the steering wheel then go wild. But think of how often you see a 10 year old fiat.

You left out the only important element of sales information. How much are you willing to spend? This will give you good advice:

http://www.parkers.co.uk/choose/#

My choice for you would be an Audi A3 or a VW Golf. Go for the 130BHP models as a minimum. Shit off a shovel and hold their price well.

Shit there are loads of VWs out there. Forget Audi, too expensive still.

Go to autotrader and do the following search parameters.

Volkswagen
Golf
Hatchback
Diesel (recommended even though diesel is more expensive, they are better engines and give longer term economy)
£8000-10000
Keywords - 140

Pick one under 50000 miles near to you. Enjoy.

All American cars have shit interiors...But of the shit handling American cars (Camero, Charger and Mustang) Mustang is the least likely to flip over on a low speed corner taken with great caution.

No doubt -- they're built for people who like to be surrounded by walls of plastic. The center console is like a foot high. It's like the interior was designed by Fisher-Price.

Previous generation was pretty awful. New Challenger is very '60s. Two tons 'o' fun, awful handling. New Camaro is almost as heavy. The new Mustang's better - 0.92G on the skidpad and about the same weight as an Impeza/Mazda 3. Not that nearly 3500 pounds for a "compact" sedan is good, mind you.
You expect a five series interior for $25,000?

No, but I think they could do a much better job. When I sit in a Tacoma and then get into a Colorado, I feel like I'm sitting in some really cheap piece of shit, regardless of whether or not it really is.

Cute but not something for long distance motorways.

25.2mpg........plus all the other running costs!

The Mazda 3 looks like it should have child seats and push chairs in the back (not quite the look I'm aiming for) ditto the Volkswagen Golf. Mustangs are classic collectors cars over and as I don't have a garage its not really an option.

The Parkers website is cool - exactly the kind of thing I was looking for, although I'm willing to spend around 8k if I need to I'd rather not as Id rather like a new a new boiler as well (one winter with no hot water is more than enough to put me off future economising of the boiler variety!)

Parkers has come up with the Toyota Celica or TVR Cerbera or the possibly a bit too cute and girlie Mitsubishi Colt CZC

Your next one, in 4 years time, might look like this, and do the equivalent of 300 mpg:

Same here.
Mega ditto.
I met her once and I found her to be a nice lady. Not kookey in any way.
Penta has always been gracious, kind and very sane in all my interactions with her.
